The vineyard on which Azpilicueta is based is the Fuenmayor vineyard. We cultivate more than 800 hectares in its different places. The vineyard in Fuenmayor is implanted in an irregular topography, at different altitudes, in a great mixture of soils, with different orientations. This results in many microclimates and, consequently, in the same variety expressing itself in very different ways.
From all the plots, we select each vintage those that will produce the grapes to make the Azpilicueta wines. We control each of the plots, their pruning, the evolution of their vegetative cycle, the advance of maturity, we taste their grapes and the moment Harvest is determined for each plot.
Tempranillo grape variety: Considered the quintessential Spanish grape, the Tempranillo grape is present in most DOs and regions that produce Vino de la Tierra, receiving almost 30 different names, all synonymous with Tempranillo.
In La Rioja, it is the main grape and occupies a cultivation area of 31,046 hectares, which represents a 61% of the Qualified DO Rioja.
