Peña el gato garnacha viñas centenarias 2016
Peña el gato garnacha centennial vines 2016 Juan Carlos Sancha Denomination of Origin Rioja for sale in our shop Riojawine.shop
In the last 20 years more than 100,000 hectares of Garnacha have been grubbed up in Spain. In the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin, Garnacha has grown from 39% of the total vineyard in 1973 to 8% in 2015.
For the first time in history, we will be able to enjoy six wines made with the Garnacha variety, from six unique vineyards, aged close to 100 years, which have been selected for their special characteristics of orientation, exposure and soil type. We are talking about historic, unrepeatable vineyards, cultivated by more than three generations of’heroic’ winegrowers who have decided to maintain the cultivation of these vineyards despite the fact that they are not economically viable.
We have in our hands the winemaking history of Rioja expressed through the terroir, that mixture of soil and climate, which is the essence of great wines. In this case we are faced with the same variety, the same production system (fermentation in 500-litre casks), the same ageing process (eleven months in French oak Troncais), the same wine-growing area (Alto Valle del Najerilla, one of the coldest areas of Rioja) and a single variable: the terroir.
The grapes of six winegrowers have been produced, only 600 bottles each, due to their low production.
