Vega Sicilia Unico Tinto Gran Reserva 2006
It is the reference of Vega Sicilia. A wine in which the qualities of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon are perfectly blended in different proportions. Each of them contributes, in each vintage, a differentiating element that makes it great.
The vines are cultivated on plots of land with soils located in contact between slopes that descend from the moorland and the alluvial plain. The shallower soil is made up of fine hillside colluvium with small fragments of limestone, deep down there are abundant quartzite gravels in a sandy matrix. On the surface there is an abundance of angular limestone edges.
Red wine that is fermented at a controlled temperature in wooden tanks with native yeast. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in wood.
After fermentation it goes through what is probably the longest ageing process in the world in a red wine, almost 10 years between wood and bottle. Going through different stages in different types of barrels. French and American wood, new and used 225-litre barrels, 20,000-litre vats, each batch determines the type of wood and the permanence in each container.
After being aged in wood, it ages in the bottle to complete a complex and long ageing process. Under normal conditions it will spend 6 years in wood and 3 years in bottle.
The different elements that participate in its elaboration are modelled and moulded in search of the master line that has guided the wine. Unique remains true to a clear and well-defined style, an inimitable character and style; elegance, firmness, aging ability… A unique and timeless taste that have raised him to the aristocracy of the great classics.
It offers an infinite complexity that is shown little by little, in each sip, its passage through the mouth is immensely silky and elegant, and has an aging capacity only available to a few wines in the world.
