Ad libitum tempranillo white 2018
This is the first wine we have developed from the white Tempranillo variety. The origin of this variety can be found in the genetic mutation of a single grape variety of Tempranillo Tinto found in 1988 in an old vineyard located in Murillo de Río Leza, La Rioja. The development of this variety was part of the Research Project for the recovery of autochthonous minority vine varieties in the D.O.Ca.Rioja, carried out at the University of La Rioja and directed by professors Juan Carlos Sancha and Fernando Martínez de Toda. The Rioja Regulatory Council approved the inclusion of this variety in the Denomination of Origin in 2007. Our White Tempranillo vineyards were planted in 1997.
The Tempranillo Blanco variety genetically coincides 97% with the Tempranillo Tinto variety. The leaves and the shape of the grape cluster are identical, as is its sensitivity to diseases and pests. Both varieties have short ripening cycles, which allows them to be grown in any subarea of Rioja, even in areas where ripening is later. The vineyards of Tempranillo Blanco have a medium-high vigour and an average yield of 6,000 kg of grapes per hectare. The bunches of grapes are small in size and of low average weight.
